 Human Authority
Section 10: Concerning Human Authority and Religious Liberty
     A. Concerning the Delegation of Human Authority
We believe God has ordained three basic human institutions and delegated authority to them:
          1) The Home (Ephesians 5:22-24)
          2) The Church (Hebrews 13:17)
          3) The State (Romans 13:1-7)
     B. Concerning The Believer's Responsibility to Human Authority
We believe an individual’s submission to human authority is a reflection upon that person’s submission to God’s authority (Romans 13:1). We believe God appointed civil government for the interest and good order of human society; that government leaders and officials are to be prayed for, conscientiously honored and obeyed; except in those things opposed to the will of our Lord Jesus Christ, who is the only Lord of the conscience and the coming King of kings. (Exodus 18:21-22; 2 Samuel 23:3; Daniel 3:17-18; Matthew 22:21; Acts 4:19-20; 5:29; 23:5; Romans 13:1-7)
     C. Concerning Accountability and Limitations of Human Authority
We believe every person is subject to these authorities, but all (including the authorities themselves) are answerable to God and governed by His Word (Psalm 75:7; Proverbs 21:1; Daniel 4:34-35). God has given each institution specific biblical responsibilities and balanced those responsibilities with the understanding that no institution has the right to infringe upon the other. The home, the church, and the state are equal and sovereign in their respective biblically assigned spheres of responsibility under God (Luke 20:25). As such, God has established lines of separation between the affairs of the church and the affairs of the state, whereby the things that belong to Caesar are rendered unto Caesar, and those things which are God's are duly rendered unto Him (Luke 20:25; John 15:18-21, 17:12-16; 18:36).
